We Are Proud to be an Inclusive Club!
At the Hawthorn TC we aim to be a tennis club that represents and celebrates the diversity of our local community.
We also know that tennis is great for the body, mind, and soul and we want to share this sport with as many people in our community as we can.
Boroondara Inclusive Clubs Project
Members of the Hawthorn TC participated in the Inclusive Clubs Project, facilitated by Boroondara City Council, Leisure Networks, and Access Health and Community.
Female Participation
We have a responsibility to consciously and actively ensure that we are attracting and retaining female members, in order to maintain a gender diversity at our Club that is representative of the broader community.
With respect to gender balanced participation at the Hawthorn TC, we have;
A current female Club President
5 female Committee members out of our current total of 11 Committee members.
Women’s teams representing just over 50% of our senior competition teams.
A focus on improving junior female participation.
Cultural Diversity
Boroondara is a culturally diverse municipality. There are a larger proportion of people who were born in China and Malaysia, for example, in Boroondara than in that of Greater Melbourne.
We encourage tennis players of culturally diverse backgrounds to join us as well as actively seek opportunities to further engage with different cultural community groups within Hawthorn and Boroondara.
Age is no barrier
Tennis is well known as being a sport that older players can continue to enjoy. We promote the continued participation of older members through Seniors, Mid-week and Masters competition teams, social tennis groups, and involvement in varied social events.
Supporting our LGBTIQ+ Community
We are active in supporting and welcoming the LGBTIQA+ tennis community, through events such as the Friday Night LGBTIQA+ Twilight Tennis series through March 2023 and our current Winter Friday Night Social Tennis program on the last Friday of each month (note as of May 2024: currently on hold during clubhouse renovations).
2024 AO Glam Slam
Hawthorn members made a mark at the 2024 Australian Open Glam Slam, including winning the Women’s Singles trophy, the final of which was played on Show Court 6, and the Women’s Open Doubles event. Go Hawthorn!
Paris Gay Games 10
Several Hawthorn TC members also headed to Europe in August 2018 to compete in the Paris Gay Games 10.
Boroondara Sports Clubs Accreditation Program - Bronze level certification
The Hawthorn TC has been recognised as a sports club that provides a safe and welcoming club by Boroondara Council.
